Oh well, there goes my plan to sync yahoo with outlook

I just got Outlook successfully installed from my  Microsoft Actionpack and Intellisync gets flogged to Nokia leaving me high and dry.

My original plan was to sync outlook with my Yahoo address book and calendar, giving me the best of both worlds. Guess we’ll have to add Address book and calendar  management to the Secantus user story list.

Cape Clear : Only a billon to go then

Cape Clear has broken cover with its latest investment round of USD$15m. The latest partners to invest are InterWest one of the Silicon Valley Sand Hill mob. As Annrai is reported to have said in 2005 in the Sunday Business Post,

“When I joined Cape Clear, I gave a ten-year commitment to really build something large, he said. “Building a billion dollar company revenue-wise would put Ireland on the map, and we have aspirations of that dimension.

So only a billion to go then Annrai :-).

From what I gather on the web and my own sources Cape Clear total investment to date is broken down as follows,

  • 2 Million in seed funding from ACT in 2000
  • 16 million in Series A funding from Accel and Greylock in 2001
  • 10 million in Series B funding from Accel and Greylock 2003
  • 5-10 million: A phantom series C round raised as a set of warrants amongst existing investors. It was never press released and their is no mention of it on the net.
  • 15 million in a series D round in the last few weeks with InterWest

So we can guess that the total investment is at least USD$48m and may be significantly more.

Thats a lot of money for a bit player in the web services/SOA/ESB market place. Even at a preference multiple of one they would need to make USD$100million in a trade sale before any of the common stock holders see a dime.

Answers on a post card for the last Irish company to make a trade sale exit that netted more than $100m…

Disclosure: I was Director of Engineering at Cape Clear from 2000 to 2003 and I have (common) stock in the company.

Rubgy : Leinster vs Munster in the Heineken Cup

Well,  Munster served up a delightful object lesson is how to close down a running game today at Lansdowne Road. Contemponi’s dreadful game didn’t do Leinster many favours either.

Well done Munster, a great game and a well deserved win.

Final Score: Leinster 6, Munster 30.

Reflash your FON Router

I won a free wireless router at the Irish Blog Awards a few weeks ago. Its a Linksys WRT54GL, but came with FON software pre-installed. I have nothing against FON and their aims but I found the software hard to use and configure. So this week I reflashed the router with the original Linksys software.

This is a straightforward process. First connect the router to a PC via a bit of ethernet cable. Now boot the router and login via http://192.168.0.1 (it might have been http://192.168.1.1). Go to the system table and look for the upgrade dialog. This upgrade dialog allows you to select a local file to upgrade the router. You can download the Linksys firmware from the linksys website. So download that file and feed it to the upgrade dialog.

The upgrade screen will print out some messages about unpacking the file and once it prints done you have completed the upload. The final step is to press the button on the front of the router to reboot the system. The light behind this button will flash furiously for a few minutes and when it settles down you have a fully configured and working original Linksys router.

Full docs are again available on the Linksys page.
