Lisbon Poster – Vote No to Traffic Lights

Check the stupidity of the guy/gal who put up this posters at Phibsboro cross roads.

Now you see it.                      Now you don’t.

FAIL.

Half of Ireland "Computer illiterates"

Silicon Republic announces today “Half of Ireland ‘computer illiterates’.

If this means half of Ireland is computer literate I’d call that success.

What Medical Professionals say…

Before the procedure…

They Say… They Mean…
This won’t hurt at all This will probably hurt a little
You may feel some pressure This will probably hurt you
You might feel a slight prick This is definitely going to hurt you
There might been some stinging You will have to muffle a cry of pain
This may hurt a little You will need restraints, I’m watching for a violent response
This will hurt You may prefer death, in fact people have died from the pain alone during this procedure

Customer Testimonial – Blacknight

PutPlace.com has been a Blacknight customer until very recently. We moved because it made more sense for us to place our hosting in EC2 (close to our S3 storage)  rather than at a remote location (bandwidth costs between an EC2 host and S3 bucket are $0) .

I can’t remember how long we hosted with Blacknight becuase their were no events to mark the passage of time. No outages, no notices of compromised credit cards, no issues whatsoever, just plain sailng all the way, solid, dependable and stable.

I still use blacknight for all my personal stuff (like this blog) and Michele continues to go beyond the call of duty in donating domains to worthy causes for free.

There are lots of good hosting providers out there but I will continue to recommend blacknight for anyone looking for an Irish based hosting solution.

Well done to all the crew at Blacknight.

Salim Ismail is in Town on Monday

Salim Ismail is in town next Monday (12th May) and suggested a meetup somewhere in Dublin. The Market Bar is traditionally where we hold these events, so if you’d like to shoot the breeze with Salim and lower a few beers at the same time come on down to Market Bar at 7.30pm on Monday.

Better make that 6.30pm Salim has to split at 7.30pm to make his flight.

Twitterfone launches

Speak your tweets, just make a call.

Twitterfone launched last night, the latest venture from Pat Phelan and the Dial2do boys Ivan and Sean.

TechCrunch and Damien Mulley have the scoop. I’ve used it and it is just too easy to use.

Well done lads, keep ’em coming!

PutPlace selected to present at Under The Radar

I met Debbie Landa at the excellent drinks reception organised by Enterprise Ireland (big shout out to John, Hilary and Fergus for organising it).

I was somewhat casually pitching her the PutPlace idea when she totally blew me away by announcing that this would be a good candidate for Under The Radar.

One thing led to another and bingo, there we are presenting at Under The Radar on 3-Jun-08.

Looking forward to it!

HP Upline – US Residents Only

I registered for HP’s Upline backup service last week. Turns out its for US residents only. I got this email today,

Dear HP Upline Service subscriber,

On Thursday, April 17th, HP suspended operation of the HP Upline Service.  We fully anticipate that suspension of the Upline Service will be temporary and short in duration, and will notify you when the Upline Service is operational again.

Please accept our sincere apology for this unanticipated interruption of your access to the Upline Service.  We appreciate your patience as we launch this new service, and are working hard to minimize inconvenience caused by this service interruption.

If you are a resident of the United States, your subscription will remain in effect and you will be able to continue using the Upline Service for the duration of your subscription period once the Upline Service is operational again.  Thank you for your patience, and we look forward to providing you with the HP Upline Service.

If you are not a resident of the United States, we regretfully must inform you that the initial launch of the HP Upline Service was intended for United States residents only.  Unfortunately, our filtering tools did not adequately screen for subscribers residing outside of the United States.  We thank you for your early adoption of the Upline Service, and look forward to being able to provide the HP Upline Service to you when we launch it in your country of residence.  Since the HP Upline Service is presently offered for use within the United States only, we will be discontinuing your current subscription.   After we notify you that the Upline Service is operational again, you will have a limited period of time to access and download files that you have uploaded onto the HP Upline Service servers.  After that time period, you will no longer have access to your present HP Upline Service account.  If you would like to be contacted by us when the HP Upline Service is made available in your country of residence, please send us an email at help@upline.com.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

Sincerely,

The HP Upline Team

I note that there is still nothing on front page of their website to indicate this restriction. Doubtless like all geographically challenged US websites, they will wait until you have filled in four forms worth of personal information before dealing the US only coup de grace.
